A MAC Protocol for Vehicle to Roadside Networks

Traditional wireless Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols suffer from a number of drawbacks when used in vehicle to roadside networks. This paper proposes an efficient MAC protocol that addresses a number of critical aspects required for MAC protocols for vehicle to roadside networks including elimination of hidden terminals, prioritized and fast handoff, fairness among nodes and optimal choice of backoff parameters. An information theoretic lower bound is derived for the MAC layer overhead associated with node reassociations. Simulation results are used to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed protocol in terms of the throughput and packet latency.
